"God’s Man"

I recently began to read Spurgeon: Prince of Preachers by Lewis Drummond. Although I have barely begun to see the unfolding of Spurgeon’s life as Drummond presents him, it is already obvious to see that Charles H. Spurgeon was “God’s Man.” It is not enough for him to be a “man of God” but the idea being “God’s Man” suggests a particular divine call. A special call. All of God’s people are called to be holy and concentrated to him. All of God’s people have direct access through Jesus Christ. All of God’s people are equal because of Christ. However, to be God’s Man means leadership. It means a call to shepherd the people of God and to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. It means living a transparent life for everyone to see. It means being set a part a second time for the work of the ministry.

Now that seminary is over and opportunities wait I am evaluating the depths of my soul. I am trying to find out if I am “God’s Man.” In no way do I question my standing before God, my love for Jesus Christ, and the necessity for all people to know The Savior. My simple question to myself is this: Does my life reflect someone who is “God’s Man?” One called by God to be an example to others and preach the gospel unashamedly and passionately. I am assured by logic that if I do forge ahead into ministry my “success” will not equal the level of Spurgeon or today’s Mark Driscoll and John Piper. No, success means faithfulness to God in all things. Success means putting down my pride, my ambitions, and my sin at the foot of the cross.

Am I God’s Man? Are you God’s Man?
